Do Tell: Adventures in Potty Training.

Have you been though the adventures of potty training? Do you have any good tips to share? Or prayers that I have any clue what I am doing? Virginia is almost 29 months old now and she has been showing signs of interest in potty training.

So last night while I was picking up a few things at Walmart. I asked her if she wanted to pick out her own big girl underwear. To my delight she was super excited. I wanted to pick up these Nick Jr. underwear that has Dora, Blues Clues, Wonder Pets, Sponge Bob, and Kai- lan, but man they were 9 dollars for a pack of 6. Luckily she wanted the princess underwear that was much cheaper.

Maybe I should ask Virginia since it looks like she is taking care of twins.
My game plan at least in my head was to have her start off with a diaper on but the underwear over top of the diaper. Then move to the underwear against the skin but a pull up on over them. Then eventually to just underwear. I also brought her a ton of Barnyard animal stickers, her favorite, for every time she pees or poops in the potty. But she insisted on wearing just her underwear.  So now I am asking her every second it seems that if she needs to sit on the potty. Pee- Pee is going to be a major player in my vocabulary I believe from now on.

I feel so lost in this part of raising my child. Not that I was really prepared for any other part of raising her. I thought my mom would be the one to go to for knowledge, but turns out that our babysitter or nanny was the one that potty trained us. Because my mom had no real success in the potty training area.

I have had a few suggestions from friends that have already been though potty training and I plan to use their advice. But I am hoping my great blog readers will be able to give me even more advice. Or maybe just tell me some funny stories so I know I am not alone in the future adventures that await me.

From a male point of view, and someone who in fact, trained our son to use the toilet, go cold turkey with the diapers. Take them off during the day and leave them off. Allot yourself one entire week, at home. Whenever you use the toilet, take the little one along with you. And have her bring her potty along, as well. Do a little “show and tell” with her. Show her what you’re doing, and suggest that she show you what you’re doing. It’s simple: Monkey see, Monkey do. But most importantly, be very understanding. It takes time. Have fun!

Thanks Diplo_Daddy, I think your right about just doing away with the diapers during the day. I think I need to add carpet cleaner to my grocery list. She already comes with me to the bathroom every time I go, she thinks it is a blast to sit on her toilet and then throw the toilet paper into my toilet when I am done. Yeah I have no clue how kids potty training learn how to use public bathrooms.

Both of my kids potty trained completely differently but once they seem to be aware of when they have to go is when you want to start. Some start earlier and some later. Once they know what the feeling feels like to go potty wear just panties all day and pull ups at night. Once they have going during the day down, and you feel you can wake them up at night to go but they will fall back to sleep, you don't want to be up all night, start waking them up to pee say at midnight and then sending them back to bed. This work awesome for both my kids, and even though they were still in pull ups they stayed dry all night. We did that for a bit, before switching to just undies at night. I think most important I didn't stress about it. If they wet at night I didn't let it frustrate or anger me. I knew they would get it when their bodies were mature enough to do it.

Thanks Melissa, yeah I think I may wait a little now with my daughter. I don't think she is at that point of telling me that she needs to go. But I do think she is getting closer. She tells me know as soon as she has peed or pooped. I am in no rush I know it will happen when she is ready.
